2005 Nomad Classic Champions

Congratulations to Christian Ferguson and Matthew Ingrassia on winning the 2005 Nomad Classic! Honourable mention goes to the runners up duo of Mark Rinaldo and Matthew Kershaw.

It was a hard-fought victory and not without its controversies. After the 36 hole tournament was done, it appeared that Christian and Matt Ingrassia had won the tournament by one stroke. However, a dispute over the handicap for Ingrassia led to the perception that Mark Rinaldo and Matt Kershaw won by one stroke. In an effort to resolve the matter amicably and give each team a fair chance, a putt-off was selected to determine the tournament champion instead of an extra hole.

As the worst golfer on the weekend, it was up to Steve Way to set the challenges for the teams to overcome. Taking advantage of hills and the rolling pitch of the practice green, holes were selected that forced the teams to chip well and follow up with precision putts in order to win the championship.

The teams went back and forth a few rounds matching shots putt for putt. On the third playoff round, it looked like Matt Kershaw and Mark Rinaldo had sown up the victory when Christian miscued on a relatively easy 3-foot putt and fired his shot 12-feet past the hole. Matt Kershaw and Mark Rinaldo were all but celebrating and Matt Ingrassia was ready to strangle Christian when Christian stepped up and drained his 12-foot putt with amazing precision to give his team a chance. Ingrassia’s clutch game showed off as he was able to putt out to give his team one more chance.

On the fourth playoff hole a challenging pin selection put the hole on top of a mound. All four players chipped to a similar low spot on the green. It looked like the two teams were going to head off to yet another round when Christian made an amazing 15-foot putt up the hill and into the hole to give his team the advantage. Mark shot well to drain his second putt, and Matt Kershaw was able to sink his in 3. It was up to Matt Ingrassia to repeat his clutch putting to close out the victory. Matt’s 3-putt solidified the victory for his team and the championship was theirs!

Congratulations to both teams on a hard-fought playoff and an exciting finish!
