2013 Nomad Classic Champions

2013 Nomad Classic Champions

Congratulations to Brett Berens and Matthew Kershaw, the 2013 Nomad Classic Champions!

The 2013 edition of the Nomad Classic was held at its closest location for the tournament to date, Niagara Falls, Ontario. The Legends of Niagara courses were home to the tournament, with Ussher’s Creek hosting a fun best ball tournament, and both official tournament rounds taking place on Battlefield. The weekend weather was cooperative for the tournament, with the final round ending on a beautiful sunny evening.

The first round of the Nomad saw two teams tied after the first day. The team of Zenny and Christian each shot a respective 2-under for a team score of 4 under par, while the team of Matt and Brett equalled the tally by shooting an even par and 4-under respectively. Stoltz and Masih were in the hunt only 3 strokes back, while the team of Way and Rinaldo at +1 also were in contention. Returning golfer Tom Shepherd was grouped with Nomad rookie James who together combined for a score of +5 despite Tom being tied for the second lowest score of the day at 3-under. The low-handicap pairing of Jones and Biehler surprised all by finishing +14 based on a struggling +12 performance by Jones. This pretty much knocked them out of contention for final round.

Despite playing the same course the next day, the results were drastically different. The teams of Way/Rinaldo, and Stoltz/Masih were eliminated from contention based on poor performances by Way and Masih who were +7 and +8 respectively. The two teams finished at +8 and +11 for the second round. Meanwhile, the final pairing also had some changing results. Matt Kershaw, in only his second round of the summer, the prior day being his first, surprised everybody by repeating his great play shooting another 4-under par. His partner, Brett, was also solid shooting 1-under for a combined 5-under as a team. Zenny struggled on day two, shooting +8, to torpedo Christian’s change at having his name on the trophy for the second time. Zenny’s falter gave the victory to Matt and Brett.

At -8 for the tournament, Matt Kershaw was in contention for his second Sandbagger Trophy, having previously won in 2008. However, it was not to be. An amazing 6-under par by Tom on the second day meant he shot a -9 for the tournament, giving him the Sandbagger trophy to take home.

Congratulations was given to Mark Rinaldo who shot the lowest stroke play overall with 182 strokes.
